This Week in Kindergarten!

We started off the week practicing for our End of the Year Celebration of Learning!  I will send more information closer to the date.  Please remember that this special concert takes place in the kindergarten class on Friday, June 21st at 10:15 a.m. for the morning class and 2:00 p.m. for the afternoon class.

Preparing our special hearts for Friday's Treaty Day.

The children chose and coloured one of the animals from the 7 teachings.  They also made a pattern with the small hearts surrounding the animal.  We planted these special hearts in the grass next to our blankets on Treaty Day.

On Tuesday, the morning class participated in the Bus Ridership program again.  The afternoon class will be doing so at a later date.

We went over the bus rules again.

Practiced jumping off from the back door emergency exit.

And lined up away from the bus.

The boys and girls drew beautiful springtime trees.  We used the bottom of a juice bottle to add pink flowers.

We practiced printing the letter X.

We did morning announcements outside on Treaty Day.  As you can see the wind was very cold!

We gifted our indigenous guests with tobacco to thank them for sharing their teachings with us.

All of the school signed a treaty, which is our school mission.

We also planted our hearts in the ground by our blankets.

The morning class attended a dance workshop.  Wayne is explaining to us all about his traditional dance.

Many, many hours of tiny beadwork.

Both the morning and afternoon class participated at the planetarium station with Mr. Rocky.

The afternoon class had a drumming workshop with Mme Burdeniuk.

We also recited the school mission and signed the treaty.

Placing our hearts in the garden.

All of the children in the school made a heart.

The children drew some of the animals from the 7 teachings at the craft station.  We ended off the afternoon singing the Buffalo Calling song with entire school on the middle of the field at the back of the school.  It was a super fun way to end the month of May.

This Week in Kindergarten!

Another short and busy week in kindergarten!  We are almost finished our letter printing booklets for the year.  Next step, we will continue to practice forming lower-case letters correctly.

Filling in the missing numbers from 1 to 20.

We have started to learn about different kinds of paper and how paper is made.

We are also learning different words to describe paper.

The boys and girls explored different types of paper.

We were touching the paper to see if it was thick (épais) or thin (mince).

Smooth (lisse) or rough (rugueux).

We will be experimenting with paper throughout the next few weeks and practicing our new vocabulary.

We will learn more about absorbent (absorbant) paper.

As well as transparent (transparent) paper.

Mme Godin read a story called "l'Histoire de Papillotte".  The book is about a little piece of paper who wants to know how she was made.  We also watched a short video about paper.  The boys and girls sorted paper products according to "rigide" (strong) and "souple" (flexible).

We further explored the strength of different types of paper.  We made bridges and discovered that some papers were not strong at all and fell after we placed 2 or 4 pennies on them.  Then Mme Godin folded the paper like a fan and placed it on top of the blocks to make a bridge.  We placed a whole container of pennies on top of the paper and it did not fall.

We passed around some cardboard and looked at it very closely, only to discover that cardboard has many fan like folds in it as well.  We came to the conclusion that we use cardboard and thicker, stronger paper to make cereal boxes, crayon boxes, etc.

This Week in Kindergarten!

Richelle Scott (North Star), one of our school division's indigenous teachers, visited our classroom on Tuesday.  She spoke with us about treaties.  We practiced a new song called "The Buffalo Calling Song" which we will sing on Treaty Day.

Working in our "All About Me" booklets.  We have been talking about our community, our city and our province.  We found some of our houses on Google Earth.  There were many students in the classroom who were unsure of the name of their streets as well as their house numbers.   Please remember that it is very important that your child knows his/her address for safety reasons.   Take some time to practice this important skill with your child.
Printing the letter V.

The boys and girls also circled all of the upper-case and lower-case Vv's.

Practicing our new spring vocabulary.  The boys and girls have to ask the following question:  "Est-ce que c'est derrière (and add the name of the object they want to look behind)?"

Adding sets of circles.  We are still practicing correct letter formation as well as checking for number reversals.

Matching letter sounds to the spring words.
Creating with the bristle blocks.

The boys and girls play with the Magna-tiles every single day.  Due to their popularity, I have ordered two more sets for next year's kindergarten class.

Not only can we draw in the classroom but the children also have access to clipboards, paper, pencils and sidewalk chalk at recess time as well.

Enjoy the long weekend!!!
