Turkey feather family project!

This little turkey is on the bulletin in the hallway next to our classroom.  He is in need of feathers for Thanksgiving.
Each child received a blank turkey feather as well as an instruction sheet in their ziplock bag today. Please get together as a family and decorate the feather using feathers, stickers, paint, markers, crayons, glitter, ribbon, leaves, whatever you like.  BE CREATIVE!

Have your child print his/her name on the back of the feather before he/she begins.  Please return the decorated feather to school no later than Tuesday of next week.  I will post a photo of the finished turkey on my blog for everyone to see.

Have a nice weekend!

The Integrated Arts - Day 3!

Yesterday was Mme Alexander's last visit in our classroom.
The boys and girls had to sort the beads into 4 colour groups and count to make sure there were 10 beads of each colour.
Then we had to make the letter V with our 4 pipe cleaners.
We had to intersect and attach them together.
And then there was the task of placing the small beads on the pipe cleaners.
The boys and girls were very focused, patient and they helped each other out.  Thank you to Mme Alexander for all of the interesting and fun things that she shared with us.

As promised, I created a slideshow to practice naming the colours in French.

The Integrated Arts - Day 2!

Today the boys and girls made paper medicine wheels.
The children had to trace and cut four coloured quarters of construction paper to form a circle.
They also drew their families on a small white circle as well as something they liked on the other side.
The children had to copy Mme Alexander's actions and not use their words or make noise.  When the aboriginal people want to hunt, they must walk very quietly in the woods so that the animals will not run away.
We danced to pow wow music in a circle. We also played a game of freeze dance.  Once Mme Alexander stopped the aboriginal music we had to freeze.  The last children standing had to come to the front of the class and hold hands in the air just like at a real pow wow.  The boys and girls are looking forward to Thursday, when we will be making real medicine wheels.

The Integrated Arts!

Our school division offers us with a great opportunity to work alongside local artists twice a year. Once in the fall and then again in the spring.
This fall, the children will be working with aboriginal artist, Cheryl Alexander.  Mme Alexander will be with us for three days this week.
Mme Alexander shared many stories about her culture with us today.
We also had the chance to explore many different aboriginal artifacts.
There were so many different things to touch.
So many things to see.
Mme Alexander also showed us some jingle dresses for traditional dancing.  These dresses are very heavy.
The afternoon class is ready to listen.
There were many different kinds of instruments.
All of these objects are things made from materials found in nature.
The furs were so soft.
During her third visit, the children will be making medicine wheels.  Ask your child about all of the special things that he/she discovered today.

TERRY FOX RUN!!!

This Week In Kindergarten!

What a fun way to learn new words.  Mme Godin played music and we passed an object around the circle.  When the music stopped, the person with the object held it up in the air and together we named the new word in French.  This week we learned the word "le cercle" (circle).
Hard at work in our colour booklets.
The children made an apple print with red (rouge) paint.
Colouring all of the circles on the paper "rouge".
Playing a math game with Mme Godin.  The first team to reach the end of board was the winner.
We are also practicing to name the colours in French. Each craft stick has a different coloured circle. There is also one craft stick with the words "Oh-Oh!".  The object of the game is to name all of the colours before picking the Oh-Oh stick.  If we pick the Oh-Oh stick before all of the colours have been named we have to put all of the sticks back in the container and start all over again.
Mme Page, our school division numeracy coach was at our school this week. We played many games with her.  She will be back in December and March.  Here the boys and girls are showing the correct amount of fingers to match the number on the card.
The student holding the card did not see it.  He had to guess the number he was holding by looking at the number of fingers the other children showed him.
We also had to make a group of friends to match the number on the cards.
Hard at play.
The boys and girls continue to explore all of the toys in the classroom.
They are making new friends and learning to share.
After sitting at the carpet for a while we have fun moving.  The boys and girls are learning to listen carefully to the words marche (walk), cours (run), saute (jump) and danse (dance).  When Mme Godin says "Arrete",  the children have to stop.
Monsieur Dickson (speech pathologist) came to play with  us.
Mme Sophie also plays many Math games with us.  She is our Math Enhancement E.A.
This group of children built a very detailed apartment complex with a parking lot for all of their vehicles.
What an extremely long chain!
Our school BBQ was on Thursday.
It was a beautiful night to spend outside with our families.

Sentence structures!

These are some of the sentence structures that we will be using daily in kindergarten all year long.  I am introducing these new sentences a few at a time.  We have been working on Bonjour, Au revoir and Est-ce que je peux aller aux toilettes, s'il vous plait?  (I have added other sentences as we will be practicing the rest of these in the next few weeks).  Please feel free to practice along with Mme Godin.  I will be adding slideshows of all the new French vocabulary taught in class as well as videos of the children singing songs and reciting poems.  Coming soon will be slideshows of the colours and objects found in the classroom.

Let me know if ever you have questions or concerns.

Merci!
Mme Godin

This Week in Kindergarten!

We finished our very first week of kindergarten!  And what a busy and fun week it was, learning new routines and meeting new friends.
We have been practicing the new words, garçon (boy) and fille (girl).  We play many games on the SMARTboard to reinforce new French vocabulary.
Practicing to hold our pencils correctly and printing our names.
The boys and girls decorated the first letters of their names with stickers, feathers, squares and stars.
We played a colour game, Mme Godin versus the boys and girls.
The children made a likeness of themselves.
These are all of the first letters of our names.
We went on a colour hunt in the classroom to find objects that are red (rouge).
I asked the students why I chose this little boy to hold the red card.  It took a few turns until we finally guessed correctly.  His shirt was "rouge".
Exploring the marble maze.
Playing a game with a friend.
These vehicles were moving big logs and rocks.
Playing with the Lite Brite.
